Chapter 12

Grumpy vampires

Our trip back to animal control hadn’t been productive. Barney and Ember were out at a meeting, and other than Randal, who was busy tinkering with something technical, there was no one else around. And neither of us could concentrate since we’d heard the news about the vampires stirring trouble.

Zandra tossed down her pen. “Let’s go to Angel Force. We need to find out what’s going on.”

I checked the time and nodded. “Better to be early than late. We can get lunch on the way.”

“We had an early lunch with Oscar. You can’t be hungry again.” Zandra shrugged on her jacket and grabbed her keys.

“Fighting terrifying dead things in a cemetery always works up an appetite,” I said.

Zandra grimaced. “It did the opposite for me. I still smell grave dirt, despite washing my hands and face twice.”

“You smell divine.” I hopped on her shoulder, and we left animal control.

I leaned against Zandra’s head, sensing her tension as we approached Angel Force. If Altruist’s vampire hive were preparing to attack, we had every right to be concerned. They’d be full of rage and grief-stricken. It would be impossible to get them to see sense.

We strode through the main doors, headed past the empty reception desk, and into the open-plan office. The sense of tension was palpable as angels dashed around, not seeming to know what they were doing. Bertoli and Cythera were examining the murder board. Brodie and Sorcha were already there, sitting in seats.

Sorcha raised a hand when she saw us, and we hurried over to join them.

“We’re here, so you may begin,” I said.

Cythera glanced over her shoulder and scowled. “Just who we were waiting for. Angels, gather around.”

Within a few moments, the rest of the Angel Force team was assembled, standing in a tense semicircle and waiting to hear what Cythera had to say.

“I’ll keep this brief because we have a lot of work ahead of us,” Cythera said. “Brodie, Sorcha, and one of Remus’s vampires, Denver, undertook a fact-finding mission, visiting Altruist’s vampires to see if they were aware of what had happened to their master.”

“It’s common for vampire hives to sense when their master is in distress,” Sorcha said. “Although, given the strange way Altruist died and the fact his body is still intact, it gave me hope they may not be aware he’d been killed.”

Brodie stood. “No such luck. They don’t know exactly what happened, but they sensed a shift in their collective energy. And since Altruist hasn’t checked in since he sent them home, they’re assuming the worst.”

“Are they making plans?” I asked.

“At the moment, they’re confused, but it could be hours or days before they figure out the truth. Then the anger will surface. When that happens, they’ll plan revenge,” Brodie said. “We’re sitting on an explosive coffin full of enraged, grief-stricken vampires. And they’ll be looking to destroy.”

“They must be stopped,” Cythera said. “They know Altruist was here, so they’ll return to Crimson Cove. They’ll also be aware he was staying with Remus, so the vampires in Oak Park Ridge are also at risk.
